When formal embalming fluids were utterly unavailable aboard heavily isolated wooden ships, strong liquor became the default scientific preservative. Dedicated explorers desperately stuffed incredibly rare tropical lizards and exotic dead snakes completely into large glass jars fully flooded with harsh drinking rum just to violently halt the massive rapid rot.
