A closer look

Even completely neutral, uncharged molecules occasionally feel lonely. Van der Waals forces occur because electrons constantly shifting around atoms randomly create extremely temporary, intensely weak patches of magnetic charge. These fleeting tiny attractions briefly pull otherwise completely unreactive molecules toward one another, barely holding them together before the localized static charge violently vanishes again.
