A closer look

Saturn’s rings aren't just politely floating there; they are actively being bullied into submission by shepherd moons. The potato-shaped moon Prometheus orbits just inside the incredibly narrow F ring. Because its orbit is elliptical, it swoops dangerously close to the icy particles every 14 hours. As it dips in, its gravity drags thousands of miles of ice chunks out of formation, creating stunning, chaotic streamers that look like someone dragged a massive fork through frosting. Yet, ironically, this violent orbital disruption steals momentum from the wayward ice particles, gravitationally sweeping them right back into a perfectly contained ring.
