Pushing boundaries in clinical acoustics usually means someone gets hurt, and early electronic auscultation was absolutely no exception. The stethophone was a clunky, heavily amplifying behemoth of a stethoscope that was just as likely to capture the subtle whoosh of a heart murmur as it was to permanently deafen the physician if the patient happened to cough directly into the microphone.
